Supporting People Through the Loss of a Beloved Companion Animal

Image

Today marks two years since I lost my rescue greyhound, Billy Rocket. Billy was more than a dog. He was a companion, a source of comfort, a daily walking partner and a constant presence through some of life's most challenging and rewarding moments. Like many people who have experienced the loss of a dog, I discovered that the grief was far deeper than I expected.

What surprised me most was how often people unintentionally minimised that loss.

"At least he had a good life."

"You can always get another dog."

"It was only a dog."

But anyone who has loved a companion animal knows they are never "just a pet."

They become part of our routines, our families, our memories and our emotional lives. At Therapy Partners, we understand that grief following the loss of a dog, cat or other companion animal can be profound. For some people it can feel as painful as losing a close family member. Pet Partners was created to provide a safe, compassionate and understanding space for those experiencing pet bereavement.
